The recent European amateur boxing championships in Minsk have once again established the Irish team as the second best boxing nation in Europe, behind only Russia. The ten man team won two golds and two silvers at the championships to demonstrate the continuing strength of amateur boxing in Ireland, so it begs the question as to why the Irish professional boxing scene is not stronger. Sports gambling fans who follow boxing will no doubt point to the potential of Carl Frampton, the current Commonwealth and European Super Bantamweight champion who is ranked three in the world by the IBF, and they would be right to do so but who else is there to get us to the fights. Many fans of gambling on boxing believe that the sport is struggling to attract attention in Ireland, and that boxing fans are now only interested in the big fights. Certainly sports gambling fans appear to be more likely to gamble on other sports with regular high profile contests involving Irish competitors, and will of course always follow success in any sport at the highest level. Ireland has a great boxing history and clearly has plenty of talent at the amateur level, so let’s hope that a few of these talented amateurs can kick start the professional boxing scene in the country and give our boxing gambling fans something to encourage them to go to the fights. In the meantime Carl Frampton is hoping to get a world title fight in Belfast early next year, and fans of gambling on boxing looking for other big fights this year have Roy Jones jr., Floyd Mayweather jr. and Manny Pacquiao all fighting over the next few months.
