Irish golf gambling fans have a home grown favourite

There is no doubt that sports gambling remains the most popular gambling activity in Ireland with horse racing top of most peoples list, but there are also many people who actively participate in a variety of sports and are therefore more likely to enjoy gambling on that particular sport. Golf is a fine example of a sport played by an increasing number of people in the country with the result that gambling on golf is also increasing. Today of course sees the start of the Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, generally recognised as being the most prestigious golf tournament in the world and the title most sought after by all the players. It is also probably the biggest golf gambling event of the year for golf fans and many other sports gambling enthusiasts. Home fans will be delighted that the favourite for this year’s championship is our own Rory McIlroy and that in itself should ensure a bumper year for Irish fans of gambling on golf. It has to be said that gambling on golf is not the easiest sports gambling activity, particularly at the start of the tournament when the full field are theoretically in with a chance, and a good indication of this is the fact that even a bet on the pre-tournament favourite pays odds of 11/1 with Paddy Power. As we all know anything can happen during four days of a golf major when even a change in the weather can seriously affect the outcome. Many golf gambling fans may elect to wait until after the cut on Friday night before having a serious bet on the winner, but of course the odds will be less at that stage.
